Thomas E Griess

General Griess began his military carerin 1943 serving in the Pacific during World War II, and saw further action in the Korean War. He received his master's degree in civil engineering from the University of Illinois, and his PhD in history from Duke University. He joined the faculty of the U.S.M.A. at West Point in 1956 and from 1969 to his retirement in 1981, he served as the academy's first head of the Department of History.
