A native-born Vietnamese, he has lived and studied in Indonesia and speaks Bahasa Indonesia. He holds degrees from Springfield Technical Community College (STCC), Hobart College, and the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). A prolific and provocative commentator in international and major Asian newspapers, he has published several books, including Indonesia Matters: Diversity, Unity, and Stability in Fragile Times (Times Editions, 2003).
