Terry Helbing began his gay theatre career in 1973, appearing in the Boston and New England touring company of Jonathan Ned Katz's Coming Out! He also acted in the original TOSOS production and The Glines revival (at the Spike Bar) of Doric Wilson's The West Street Gang. Terry Helbing began his gay theatre career in 1973, appearing in the Boston and New England touring company of Jonathan Ned Katz's Coming Out! He also acted in the original TOSOS production and The Glines revival (at the Spike Bar) of Doric Wilson's The West Street Gang. He produced and starred in Terry Miller's Pines '79 for The Glines, and served as general manager for their Sixth Anniversary Rep. He was cofounder and codirector of Meridian Gay Theatre from 1983-1987. For Meridian he appeared in Doric Wilson's Street Theatre at the Mineshaft, starred in The Demolition of Harry Fay, and appeared in Franny the Queen of Provincetown. In 1991, he acted in Cocktails at the Red Rooster, which was a benefit for Joseph's Surgical, an AIDS organization.He publishes gay/lesbian plays by Jane Chambers, Robert Chesley, et al. under the JH Press imprint, which also published his 1980 work, Gay Theatre Alliance Directory of Gay Plays, which he compiled, edited and introduced.His weekly theatre column, "The Fourth Wall," runs in New York Native, of which he is theatre editor; it includes reviews of shows, theatre compact discs, insider news, and information about upcoming shows of all types.Since 1977 his articles on theatre, books, video, and music have appeared in Christopher Street, The Advocate, Soho News, 7 Days, Genre, Theaterweek, and many other publications.
