As lifelong residents of the Rocky Mountain West, Sheila Ruble and her husband, Bob, have had their share of encounters with wildfire and its aftermath, both at their cabin and at their home, a few miles north of Billings, Montana.Always fascinated by animal behavior and training, Ruble has worked with a number of dogs and horses, as a dog obedience instructor, US Pony Club instructor, and 4-H leader. She has competed successfully in dressage, dog obedience, canine scent work, and lower-level agility. For eight months in 2009, she worked with seven severely traumatized dogs rescued from a hoarding situation. An avid amateur photographer, Ruble shot many of the original photos on which the illustrations in both Fire Pony and Cricket's Choice were based. Fire Pony, written in Ruble's mid-seventies and her first young adult book, was a 2019 finalist for the Willa Award for Literary Excellence: Women Writing the West. She is also the co-author of a book of poetry for adults, Listening to Stones. See less
