Sarah Palmer

Ithaca, New York native Sarah Palmer served three years as an Army nurse in Maryland and Virginia hospitals during the Civil War. Her personal account of those years was published in 1867. After the war, Palmer married a man named David Young and moved to Iowa where she lived for 40 years. She is buried in Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines.
