Robert L Norton, editor and principal author, has more than fifty years experience in the practice of mechanical engineering design and has taught mechanical engineering at university level for over forty years. He holds undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Technology from Northeastern University in Boston, and an M.S. in Engineering Design from Tufts University in Medford, Mass. He was awarded the Doctor of Engineering degree (h.c.) by Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 2012. He first encountered and designed cams for camera mechanisms in 1959 at Polaroid Corporation and has been fascinated by them ever since. He spent many years designing and analyzing cam-follower systems at Polaroid, Gillette, and many other companies through his engineering consulting practice over the past forty years. He taught kinematics, dynamics, stress analysis, and machine design to mechanical engineering students for over forty years at Northeastern, Tufts, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, Mass. where he is currently the Milton Prince Higgins II Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Mechanical Engineering Department. His cam design program, Dynacam, is used around the world by many companies large and small, and his popular textbooks on kinematics and machine design have been translated into many languages and are used worldwide.
