REUBEN ARCHER (R.A.) TORREY was an American evangelist, Congregational pastor, educator, and writer. He aligned with Keswick theology--the Higher Life movement, also known as deeper Christian life--a Protestant theological tradition within evangelical Christianity that espouses a distinct teaching on the doctrine of entire sanctification: the Christian should move on from his initial conversion experience to also experience a second work of God in his life. Torrey was one of the three editors of The Fundamentals , a 12-volume series that gave its name to what came to be called "fundamentalism." Affiliated with the Bible Institute of the Chicago Evangelization Society (now Moody Bible Institute) and later, the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (now Biola University), he helped start the Montrose Bible Conference in Pennsylvania, which continues today, and was the pastor of the Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles, CA. R.A. Torrey held Bible conferences and preached throughout the world and wrote more than 40 books, including HOW TO PRAY and HOW TO STUDY THE BIBLE FOR GREATEST PROFIT . See less
