R. J. GILL GILLILAN grew up in Carbon County, Wyoming, and graduated from Rawlins High School. He attended Casper College, Idaho State University and the University of Wyoming, then joined the U. S. Army and served in Germany. His interest in law enforcement was originally sparked by a ride-along program with the Denver Fire Department's Arson Investigation Unit. Later, Gill attended the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy and became a certified peace officer. He obtained advanced investigative training at the Nevada Law Enforcement Academy and was certified as an investigator by the Council on Licensure, Enforcement and Regulation. He served on both the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Use of Force Review Board and the FBI's board dedicated to preventing the exploitation of children. Now retired, Gill was a law and regulatory enforcement officer for over twenty years, as well as a businessman. Gill became interested in Desert Dust's story when he obtained a copy of the famous Desert Dust photograph. For the past seventeen years, using his investigative skills, he has actively researched the subject. Gill has amassed a comprehensive collection of information from regional libraries, archives, and personal interviews, along with associated memorabilia. The research documents represent his effort to preserve a valuable piece of Wyoming's western history, and the collection is housed at the American Heritage Center, University of Wyoming in Laramie.
