Dr. Pauly received a B.A. from St. Olaf College in 1988, his M.A. in history from Villanova University in 1992, and his Ph.D. in Modern European History from the University of Delaware in 2000. He has taught World History at the University of Delaware and Western Civilization, Modern European History, and African History at Manlius Pebble Hill High School. His dissertation, "Unnatural Selections: British Evolutionary Anthropology and the Civilizing Mission," concluded that Victorian British anthropology developed out of older intellectual ethnological traditions and patterns of thought. A number of these patterns, or motifs, were largely re-articulated in order to accord with the language and style of modern science. This leant credibility and apparent professionalism to ethnological inquiry. Anthropology ultimately came to advocate a universalist, hierarchical, and evolutionary construction of the world's various cultures. It was this formulation which both echoed, and helped underwrite, the British Empire's civilizing mission. At UCA, Dr. Pauly teaches World History 1310. See less
