Philip Grant was born in Edinburgh and, from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, was commissioned into The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), serving with them until their disbandment in 1968\. The rest of his army career culminated as a staff officer at the army headquarters in Scotland.
