Peter J. Wallison is a senior fellow and the Arthur F. Burns Fellow in Financial Policy Studies at AEI, where he codirects the program on financial policy studies. He previously practiced banking, corporate, and financial law at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP in Washington, DC, and New York City. In 1986 and 1987, he was White House counsel to President Ronald Reagan. From 1981 to 1985, he was general counsel of the US Department of the Treasury, where he had a significant role in the development of the Reagan administration's proposals to deregulate the financial services industry. Between 1972 and 1976, Mr. Wallison was special assistant to New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller and, subsequently, counsel to Mr. Rockefeller when he was US vice president.
