Nicholas Herbert was for many years a professional local historian as Editor from 1970 to 2003 of the Victoria History of Gloucestershire, the standard reference work on the county's history. In that post he was responsible for editing six volumes of the History, covering among other areas Gloucester city, the Forest of Dean, and the Stroud valleys, and was himself the author of the histories of over 40 towns and villages, as well as contributing articles to other books and historical journals....See more
Nicholas Herbert was for many years a professional local historian as Editor from 1970 to 2003 of the Victoria History of Gloucestershire, the standard reference work on the county's history. In that post he was responsible for editing six volumes of the History, covering among other areas Gloucester city, the Forest of Dean, and the Stroud valleys, and was himself the author of the histories of over 40 towns and villages, as well as contributing articles to other books and historical journals. Since retirement he has continued research and writing on Gloucestershire history, particularly on aspects of the Georgian age, and regularly gives talks to local history societies and other bodies.
