Michael Newby grew up in London. Educated at Latymer Upper School and the University of York, as a teenager he was a member of the National Youth Theatre. He taught English in York, Lewes and Manchester before continuing his career in Higher Education. First in Oxford, then Swansea and finally at the University of Plymouth, he rose to become Dean of a large faculty of Arts & Education. Michael Newby grew up in London. Educated at Latymer Upper School and the University of York, as a teenager he was a member of the National Youth Theatre. He taught English in York, Lewes and Manchester before continuing his career in Higher Education. First in Oxford, then Swansea and finally at the University of Plymouth, he rose to become Dean of a large faculty of Arts & Education. For many years, he represented the work of teacher education in the universities at national level. Internationally, he has lectured in Australia, China, Finland, Malaysia and the USA, where he worked for a while as a visiting professor. In 2004, he became a consultant for Teachers TV and for what was then the Teacher Training Agency. He was awarded Masters Degrees in Applied Linguistics (Reading, 1978) and Medieval Studies (Exeter, 2010). He lives in Devon with his wife Sue. See less
