Mark P. Jensen, PhD, is a professor and the vice chair for research at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Washington, in Seattle, Washington, USA. He has been studying chronic pain and helping individuals effectively manage pain for over 40 years. He has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and other funding agencies to study the efficacy and mechanisms of different treatments for chronic pain, including hypnosis. He has published extensively (11 books and over 700 articles and book chapters) on the topics of pain assessment and treatment. He has received numerous awards for his writing and scientific contributions including: the Jay Haley Early Career Award for Innovative Contributions to Hypnosis from the International Society of Hypnosis; the Clark L. Hull Award for Scientific Excellence in Writing on Experimental Hypnosis from the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis; the Wilbert E. Fordyce Clinical Investigator Award from the American Pain Society; and both the Distinguished Contributions to Scientific Hypnosis, and the Distinguished Contributions to Professional Hypnosis Awards from the American Psychological Association Division 30, among others. His book on the use of hypnosis for chronic pain management (Hypnosis for Chronic Pain Management: Therapist Guide, published by Oxford University Press) won the 2011 Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis Arthur Shapiro Award: Best Book on Hypnosis.
