Still bewildered, he was soon whisked away to mysterious southern California until 1959, when at the age of eight, his family returned to Montana. Lyle lived a life of juvenile delinquency in Bozeman and graduated from Great Falls High School in 1968. After self-imposed exile in Seattle, he again returned to Montana, graduating from the University of Montana in 1972. Surprising a large number of policemen, judges, teachers, and close relatives, he acquired a law degree there in 1979. Manley worked as a state lawyer in Helena, Montana, until retiring in 2009.
