Doctor Lotfi Bashir is a pediatrician who has been in practice in Selma, Alabama for almost 30 years. After finishing his pediatric training at the Medical Center of Delaware, he looked for areas to practice where his services could really make a difference in peoples' lives. He found his calling in Dallas County. During his career as a pediatrician, Dr. Bashir had the opportunity to watch children grow up from early childhood into adulthood; many of them fell victims to drugs and alcohol or ended up in prison. This was an eye-opener for Dr. Bashir. He felt strongly that better education, reading, and improved literacy works like a vaccine for the young children's minds. He believes that it makes them more immune to the harsh and often unfair reality that some of them endure on a daily basis. Dr. Bashir feels the children's path to adulthood is like going through a long winding road filled with stumbling blocks and dangerous traps, but it is also studded with candles that light this exciting but sometimes dark road.
