Kishanda Fulford was born in 1960, in East Africa where her father was a District Commissioner. She is named after a beautiful rift valley where her parents camped on a hunting expedition. When Tanganyika obtained independence the family returned to England. She had a chequered educational career which included stays of various lengths at girls' boarding schools before her father, finally losing patience, sent her to the local state school. After leaving school she became an itinerant journalist whilst also working for two of the most well-known auction houses in London. In 1991, after a lightning romance, she married Francis Fulford andbecame chatelaine of Great Fulford, a large rambling, mainly Tudor, manor that has been in the family for eight hundred years.
