Kevin R. Magill is an Assistant Professorof Secondary and Social Studies Education at Baylor University. Dr. Magill receivedPh.D. in Social Studies Education from The University of Texas atAustin, and holds Masters Degrees in Education and Public Administration fromThe University of California, Davis, and California State University, Stanislaus, respectively. He also earned a BA in Communication Studies whileattending California State University, Stanislaus. Dr. Magill's researchexplores two areas, first, how social studies teachers understand therelationship between teaching and civics and how their own ontologies and ideologiesinform their pedagogical practices. Second, he considers how and when teachershelp social studies students utilize cultural knowledge and critical inquiry todo the authentic work of civics. Dr. Magill's most recent scholarly worksinclude "The primacy of relation: Social studies teachers and the praxis ofcritical pedagogy" with Professor Cinthia Salinas and "Critically civic teacherperception, posture and pedagogy: Negating civic archetypes" published in Theoryand Research in Social Education and The Journal of Social Studies Research respectively. He also published a co-edited book with ProfessorArturo Rodriguez recently called, Imagining Education: Beyond the Logicof Global Neoliberal Capitalism. Prior to his work in the academy, Dr.Magill was a middle and high school teacher in public and private schools inSeaside, Vacaville, and Sacramento, California where he taught Social Studies, English Language Arts, and Opportunity/Intervention.
