With an eye to irony, after a lifetime of observations and experiences from cello lessons, choir singing, art school, marriage, three kids, divorce, welfare, nurse's training, jobs in prison, travel to Vietnam, Russia, and South Africa, and homes in NYC, Georgia and Maryland, she sat down to write.
