Ordonez was in Havana, Cuba in 1922 and received his secondary education in Ontario, Canada. After serving in the Canadian Army, he became a Canadian citizen in 1946. He has a B.A. and an M.A. in History from the University of Toronto. He taught at a preparatory school in Toronto from 1950 to 1952, and in the fall of that year joined the faculty at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire.
