John P. Cann is a Research Fellow and retired Professor of National Security Studies at Marine Corps University, a former member of the research staff at the Institute for Defense Analyses, and former Scholar-in-Residence at the University of Virginia. John P. Cann is a Research Fellow and retired Professor of National Security Studies at Marine Corps University, a former member of the research staff at the Institute for Defense Analyses, and former Scholar-in-Residence at the University of Virginia. He earned his doctorate in War Studies at King's College London in 1996, published Counterinsurgency in Africa in 1997, Memories of Portugal's African Wars, 1961-1975 (ed.) in 1998, The Brown Waters of Africa in 2008, The Flechas in 2013, Flight Plan Africa in 2015, and some thirty plus articles on small wars over the years. He is a retired naval captain and flight officer specializing in open ocean reconnaissance aviation and served in a variety of aviation assignments, including command. He has been awarded the Portuguese Navy Cross Medal and the Medal of Dom Afonso Henriques for his writings on conflict in Lusophone Africa. He is an Associate Member of the Academia de Marinha.
