Dr. Joan C. Payne is Professor of Communication Disorders and a nationally and internationally recognized scholar on adult neurogenic language disorders. Dr. Joan C. Payne is Professor of Communication Disorders and a nationally and internationally recognized scholar on adult neurogenic language disorders. Dr. Payne is a graduate of Howard University's and the Ohio State University's Departments of Speech and she is the first Ph.D. recipient in Communication Sciences from Howard University. A member of the Academy of Aphasia she is perhaps best known for her work on cultural and ethnic issues and African American stroke survivors. Over the years, she has also contributed articles, book chapters, and scholarly presentations on Sickle Cell Disease, traumatic head injury, chronic health issues and stroke across ethnocultural parameters, international issues in communication disorders, corporate responsibility to the aged, functional assessment of ethnocultural older adults, therapeutic intervention for inner-city residents, and approaches to dialectal variation. Dr. Payne's ongoing research is part of the Howard University Center for the Study of Stroke in African Americans. A Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Dr. Payne has been honored over the years for her research and scholarly achievement and for her mentoring of graduate students. Among her awards are Howard University's School of Communications? Wall of Fame, Mentor of the Year from the Howard University Graduate Student, Distinguished Research Achievement from the School of Communications at Howard, the Dean of the School of Communications Excellence Award for Outstanding Leadership and Service, and the Clinical Achievement Award from the District of Columbia Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
