Author Jo Van Horn lives on her small ranch out West, where the dogs, cats, and chickens all run free. The dogs bark at anything that moves, the cats sit by the dogs and lean on them, and the chickens come when the author calls as she scatters wheat for them to eat. When winter comes, the horses get hay, and the chickens find shelter in the barn or the old chicken house that has a small door which allows them to run in and out.
