Jesse Katz spent fifteen years as a journalist at the Los Angeles Times and another nine years at Los Angeles Magazine . His writing has appeared in The New York Times, New York magazine , Rolling Stone, Details, The American Prospect, Pacific Standard , and in the anthologies Best American Magazine Writing and Best American Crime Writing .
