JAMES OWEN DORSEY (1848-1895) was an Episcopalian missionary, linguist, and ethnologist who worked for the Bureau of American Ethnology of the Smithsonian Institution. As a missionary, he traveled extensively in the Dakota Territory and became an expert in the language and culture of the southern Siouan people.
