James Eastwood joined the British Army in 2002, aged 16, graduating in 2003 from the Army Foundation College and choosing to serve in the Army Air Corps. He served in the UK's first Attack Helicopter (Apache) Regiment, deploying to Afghanistan in 2006 and 2007. Following service in Belize and wanting to see "some real action", he transferred to the Royal Artillery (RA) in 2009 to become a Forward Observer within a Fire Support Team (FST). James deployed to Afghanistan in 2010, as a Forward Observer with 97 ('Nine-Seven') Battery RA, attached to the Arnhem Company of the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment. At the time of writing, James is about to deploy to Afghanistan in late 2102, as a Forward Air Controller, serving with the Afghan National Army (ANA) as part of the Brigade Advisory Group - the British Army's key instructors and mentors to the ANA.
