Jacob A Riis

JACOB A. RIIS (1849-1914) a Danish immigrant who arrived in New York in 1870 became a newspaper reporter and a social reformer. Having experienced poverty firsthand, he explored the social conditions of the New York poor in articles and books, such as in How the Other Half Lives and The Battle with the Slum. He was also a social documentary photographer, who became famous for his early adoption of flash in photography.
