Furnas, American author and social historian (1905--2001), published a noted social history of the U.S. The three-volume work included The Americans: A Social History of the United States, 1587-1914 (1969), Great Times: An Informal Social History of the United States, 1914-1929 (1974), and Stormy Weather (1977), covering the years 1929-45. Furnas, American author and social historian (1905--2001), published a noted social history of the U.S. The three-volume work included The Americans: A Social History of the United States, 1587-1914 (1969), Great Times: An Informal Social History of the United States, 1914-1929 (1974), and Stormy Weather (1977), covering the years 1929-45. Furnas, a prolific contributor to newspapers and magazines, wrote one of the most widely circulated articles in history, ". . . And Sudden Death," about driving fatalities and the need for automobile safety; some eight million reprints were issued after the article was originally published in Reader's Digest in August 1935. Furnas's autobiography, My Life in Writing: Memoirs of a Maverick, appeared in 1989. See less
