J. L. Woodson's writing career started with the critically acclaimed novel, The Things I Could Tell You!, an English assignment written at age fifteen that was published by Macro Publishing Group when he was sixteen followed by becoming a co-author of How to Win the Publishing Game with Avalon Betts-Gaston, Esq. and Dr. Trevy McDonald at sixteen; a contributing author to the NAACP Image Award-winning anthology, Breaking the Cycle at seventeen, and Superwoman's Child: Son of a Single Mother at age nineteen which was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literature. He is the recipient of Fisk University's Talented Tenth Award, listed in the Who's Who Among American High School Students, Recipient of Coca-Cola, Clear Channel, State Farm Insurance and McDonald's Youth Leadership Award, Chicago Urban League's 1st Place Winner in Citywide Stock Market Competition, Winner of Chicago Urban League's Young Entrepreneurial Business Plan Competition, OHMC Most Professional Award, OHMC Most Dedicated Student Award, MGCA's Best Young Author Award. He is also a member of Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity Inc. He has received several awards as well as many literary distinctions: Best Youth Fiction (Mahogany Book Club - New York), articles in Black Issues Book Review, Columbus Dispatch, Chicago Defender, The Tennessee Tribune and The Hammond Times. His has been a panelist and presented at Fisk University - Talented Tenth Celebration, Borders Books & Cafe [Chicago - Beverly], Borders Books & Cafe [Chicago - Downtown], Borders Books & Music [Chicago - Hyde Park], Barnes & Noble [Columbus, Ohio], Barnes & Noble [Kansas City, Missouri], The RAW Affair / Atlanta 2005 & 2006, Harlem Book Fair / New York 2003 & 2004, Expo For Today's Black Woman / Chicago 2003, 2004, 2005, National Book Club Conference 2003, State of Illinois - Bureau of Unemployment Insurance - February 2004, The How to Win the Publishing Game Seminar in Chicago (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008). Additionally, he was 1st Place National Champion-American Karate Association and 1st Place National Champion - Sparring, American Karate Association. J. L. splits his time working on his next novel, Circle Until You Land, and website development. He currently resides in Orangeburg, SC, where he attends South Carolina State University. See less
