Irene Wittig was born in Rome, lived in Argentina and Austria before arriving in the US when she was seven. She grew up in New York, went to the High School of Music and Art and City College; studied in Germany on a Fulbright, later lived in Italy for almost five years, and much later Switzerland for six.
