Hugh Montgomery was born and brought up in Plymouth, on the south coast of England. "I have always had a love of the sea," he says. An avid diver, he spent most of his youth on or under the waves and was part of the team that salvaged Henry VIII's flagship the Mary Rose. "It was at this time," he says, "that I met a real modern-day pirate, Bruno, who plundered wrecks from his ship The Arctic Tern." The author began writing THE VOYAGE OF THE ARCTIC TERN as a Christmas present for his young godchildren but didn't finish it until three years later! After receiving a number of rejections, he decided to publish the book at his own expense. The risk paid off: every single copy was sold, and THE VOYAGE OF THE ARCTIC TERN won the Self-published Book of the Year Award and the Poetry Book of the Year Award 2000. When not writing epic adventure stories, Hugh Montgomery works as a physician and consultant in intensive care at University College London.
