Hugh Cantlie was born in Shanghai, where his father was an adviser to the Chinese Government. On his return to the United Kingdom, he was commissioned into the Scots Guards after Sandhurst. Following his army career, he qualified as a Chartered Surveyor, during which time he spent five years developing commercial property in Germany before becoming involved in conservation projects in the UK. Hugh Cantlie was born in Shanghai, where his father was an adviser to the Chinese Government. On his return to the United Kingdom, he was commissioned into the Scots Guards after Sandhurst. Following his army career, he qualified as a Chartered Surveyor, during which time he spent five years developing commercial property in Germany before becoming involved in conservation projects in the UK. These included the rescue of the old Billingsgate Fish Market and Belford Hall in Northumberland, where he lived for a number of years. Now settled in rural Oxfordshire, Hugh is also the Author of Ancestral Castles of Scotland and has lectured worldwide on architectural subjects. See less
