(1819-1891). Quand sa famille connait des problemes financiers, Herman Melville s'engage dans la Marine. En 1841, il deserte d'un baleinier et se cache dans les iles du Pacifique. De retour a Boston en 1844, il ecrit des romans d'aventures. C'est surtout au XXe siecle que son oeuvre a ete reconnue.
