H.M. Brock (1875-1960) enjoyed a long and successful career as an illustrator. Brock grew up in Cambridge, where his father was a specialist in Oriental Languages. Brock was greatly influenced by his three brothers, also illustrators, with whom he shared a studio. H.M. Brock (1875-1960) enjoyed a long and successful career as an illustrator. Brock grew up in Cambridge, where his father was a specialist in Oriental Languages. Brock was greatly influenced by his three brothers, also illustrators, with whom he shared a studio. He eventually developed his own vigorous style, which lent itself very well to illustrating such works as The Deerslayer (1900), Sir Walter Scott's Waverly (1899), Shakespeare's King Richard II , four of Robert Louis Stevenson's novels, and several of Charles Dickens's novels. A devotee of Gilbert and Sullivan, H.M. Brock designed many posters and other promotional materials for the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. Considered one of the greats in his field, Brock lived and worked in Cambridge until his death. See less
