H. KERN (1833-1917) was born in the Dutch East Indies and returned to his parents' native Netherlands for his education. An authority on Sanskrit and linguistics, he was a noted orientalist and a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. F. MAX MÜLLER (1823-1900) was a German author and orientalist who lived in England most of his life.
