Geoffrey Nyarota became the first Zimbabwean journalist to tackle official corruption when he exposed the Willowgate Scandal in 1988, resulting in a skirmish with President Mugabe. He was editor of The Chronicle, a state-owned daily from which he was summarily dismissed. In 1999 he became the founding editor-in-chief of The Daily News, which was banned in 2003.
