Gene Upchurch is a native of Durham and a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a sportswriter before embarking on a 28-year career in public aairs, community relations, and legislative advocacy in the utility industry. He is a proud recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the State of North Carolina's highest civilian honor.
