Gene Smith was born in Wytheville, Virginia, in 1943, to Waymeth and Marie Smith. He attended Marion Senior High School in Marion, Virginia. He joined the USAF in 1961, where he served in Kansas and Spain. He married Nancy Gross from Seven Mile Ford, Virginia, in 1961 and moved to Seville, Spain, in 1963 where they lived there until 1965.
