Gabriel Ferrater
Gabriel Ferrater (1922-1972) was born near Tarragona, spent his teenage years in France and started writing poetry seriously in his mid-30s. A volume of collected poems was published in 1968. He committed suicide shortly before his 50th birthday. Arthur Terry was not only considered a world-authority on Spanish / Catalan literature, but was also a renowned translator. His sudden death in January 2004 was headline news in Barcelona, where he was a much honoured and revered figure.
