Francis Gallagher was a participant in the late Doctor John Robb's New Ireland Group, that was founded in the 1980s. Francis was inspired by John's creative and original ideas to resolve conflict through consensus based politics and this friendship encouraged Francis to develop his own thinking around a confederal Ireland. Francis is active in politics today and he has helped campaign, successfully, to retain the emergency department at Daisy Hill Hospital Newry, in Ireland. Francis is very interested in the idea of a participatory direct democracy whereby the people are sovereign rather than the politicians, through a flawed system of representative democracy.
