Elisabeth Lichtenberger is a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Academia Europaea and Academy for Regional Research (Germany); chair for urban and regional research, Vienna University (development of special graduate programme); founder of the Institute for Urban and Regional Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and permanent member of scientific advisory boards for the Austrian and the Vienna municipal governments. Her major research interests include the environment's and farming's and leisure societies' interaction in high mountainous areas, the lives of guest workers in relation to the societies of their home and host countries, disorganisation problems of postindustrial urban societies, urban decay and urban redevelopment in various political systems, transition problems in Eastern Europe as to the settlement systems, labour and housing markets.
