During his era his detective stories were as popular as Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. He published nearly 300 detective and mystery stories. Many of Muddock's stories feature "Dick Donovan, the Glasgow Detective" and he later adopted this as his pen name. His other famous characters include Russian Secret Service agent Michael Danevitch, Vincent Trill of the Detective Service, private detective Tyler Tatlock and criminologist Fabian Field. Muddock also wrote history, guidebooks for the Alps and an autobiography. His detective stories have sensational plots but not quite as much deduction and logical thought as readers find in the Sherlock Holmes stories. See less
