Hughes was born in the United Kingdom and was educated at the University of Manchester where he graduated with a BA in English. He began writing poetry at the age of 11. After a short soccer career, he worked as a radio sports journalist before becoming a full time freelance writer. He moved to the U.S. in 1997.
