Derek qualified as Architect RIBA in 1973, and the family moved from Reigage in Surrey to Whitley Bay in 1978 when Derek joined Faulkner Browns Architects at Killingworth. He was licensed Reader by the Bishop in Newcastle Cathedral in 1981, and was appointed Emeritus in 2001. After thirteen years at Faulkner Browns, Derek finished his career as Surveyor in the Newcastle Diocese, and retired in 1996. After retirement, he continued in practice as a private architect, with several local projects and culminating in the conversion of a Methodist church into offices for a charity working with homeless young people. The church hall was converted into worship space, and is now being used as refuge space with food and leisure facilities for homeless young people. See less
