In 1993, Connie Correia founded Small Potatoes Press, a boutique publishing house that produced a dozen books, and Cuizine, a foodie magazine covering South Jersey and Philadelphia. In 2005, pregnant with her second baby and having just opened The Pop Shop restaurant in Collingswood, Connie published what she thought would be her last book - fittingly a book about motherhood. She "retired" from publishing, as the restaurant's birth, plus new baby Dashiell left little time for publishing. In 2023, as that "new baby" turned 17, Correia dreamed of publishing again - this time with her son, Dashiell Grey, a high school junior, as the author. In November 2023, Dashiell's first book of poetry -- "The Diary Young" -- was published by Small Potatoes Press."Dashiell is incredibly inspiring - both for his talent and his commitment to writing," says Correia. "His work is complex, nuanced, and profound. It deserves to be in print. And I want other young writers to see that anything is possible. They have the power to share their words."The release of "The Diary Young" rekindled a love of publishing for Connie. She has written coloring, activity, and quote books with many more titles coming.Although publishing has changed significantly in the last 17 years -- "no more ordering 5000 books and driving them around to stores" -- the thrill of creating and holding a physical book still holds the same magical power.
