Charis E. Kubrin, Assistant Professor of Sociology, received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Washington in 2000. Professor Kubrin has published many papers and is currently working on a variety of projects that reflect her larger research agenda on neighborhoods, race and violence as central to social disorganization theory. Her work in this area is mostly quantitative although she has published a theoretical statement on social disorganization theory that outlines substantive and methodological new directions for the theory. Professor Kubrin is currently moving into the realm of music. A new line of research examines the intersection of music, culture, and social identity, particularly as it applies to hip hop and minority youth in disadvantaged communities. In 2005, Professor Kubrin received the Ruth Shonle Cavan Young Scholar Award from the American Society of Criminology and the Morris Rosenberg Award for Recent Achievement from the District of Columbia Sociological Society.
