Ross saw action on Iwo Jima as a twenty-three year old Marine sergeant combat correspondent. After V-J Day he volunteered for an additional six months' duty in North China. In 1946, he joined the Washington staff of the Associated Press, covering government agencies, Capitol Hill, and the White House.
