Benjawan Poomsan Becker was born in Bangkok and spent her childhood in Yasothon, a small province in rural northeast Thailand. Benjawan Poomsan Becker was born in Bangkok and spent her childhood in Yasothon, a small province in rural northeast Thailand. Since her family is ethnic Laotian, she grew up speaking both the Thai and Lao languages. She received a B.A. in English from Khon Kaen University in Thailand. While studying for her M.A. degree at Kobe University in Japan, she gained extensive experience teaching the Thai language to foreigners at the Japan-Thailand Trade Association and the Berlitz Language School in Osaka. In the United States, Benjawan has taught Thai language classes at Stanford University, at a number of Thai temples in the San Francisco Bay Area, and to numerous private students. She has over fifteen years experience as a professional translator and court interpreter in the Thai and Lao languages, and has been a registered Thai and Lao interpreter with the Judicial Council of California since 1995.
