Bela Kalman was born in Hungary and emigrated during the 1956 uprising to the Uninted States, where he made his living from advertising photography. His work has appeared in many magazines, art exhibits, and illustrated books, is represented in the permanent collections of eighteen museums, and has won numerous awards. In 1990, Kalman was given a lifetime appointment as Master of the Federation of International Artistic Photographers, a title held by only twenty-five photographers; he is the only one from the United States.
