Baroness Emma Orczy

The Baroness Emma Orczy was born on September 23, 1865 in Hungary, the daughter of the composer Baron Felix Orczy and the Countess Emma Wass. Forced to flee peasant unrest in 1868, the family lived in a number of Euroean cities before moving to Britain in 1880. She married a young illustrator named Montague MacLean Barstow. She started writing shortly after the birth of her son. Her best known works are a series of novels featuring the character the Scarlet Pimpernel who rescues aristocrats during the French Revolution. She also wrote a number of detective stories which were collected in several books which include The Case of Miss Elliot, The Old Man in the Corner, Lady Molly of Scotland Yard, and Unravelled Knots. She died on November 12, 1947 at Henley-On-Thames, UK. See less
